Question about the new handicap feature

If I don’t enable it right away is it still calculating players handicaps in the background? Or do I need to have it on for it to do that? I ask because ideally I would like to not run handicaps most of the time and run it in special occasions. If that makes sense? Normal league for the most part and then run maybe a special Saturday league handicap based once a month etc.

Thanks for your thoughtful message, Matt! Singles league events that are using a Smart Layout will factor into handicaps calculations in the background, unless the league admin turns off “Scorecard statistics” for the event (for example, if you’re playing with mulligans).

So even if you haven’t enabled handicap scoring yet, your league participants will already have an established handicap when you do toggle it on for a Saturday (provided that they’ve played in a singles event and kept score on a Smart Layout within your league in the past year). Up to their most recent five qualifying rounds will be used for their handicap calculations, and you can learn more about the math behind UDisc handicap scoring in this article: How does handicap scoring work in UDisc Leagues? : UDisc Support

You’re very welcome Matt, when your league does try out handicap scoring, we would love to hear any feedback on how it goes. Cheers and happy discing!

I have a league that is a handicap league. I have been running it for two years now and have been waiting for you to actually implement this feature. Sadly however I don’t think we will be using this feature because as a league that is played year round - a handicap that is based on the most 5 recent rounds is just too little. We currently have been using a formula that limits the rounds to the most recent 25 scores and drops the worst score after you have played 16 rounds . Our season is generally divided into 16 week sessions however. So it’s not often that a low score does get dropped . I was hoping that league admins would have some ability to increase that rounds number but it doesn’t appear as if that is possible .

Thank you for sharing this feedback, Kevin! We haven’t heard from many leagues that are using so many rounds to calculate players’ handicaps. Controls like adjusting the number of rounds that are considered may be something our team explores in future development efforts, especially if we hear this kind of request becomes popular. Also, is this related to your DiscBeat Club, or are you referring to a league that is run separately from UDisc?

This feature is awesome however, we will not be able to use it since we base handicap on the last 10 rounds. In addition, we also have a bagger rule which if one of the last 10 rounds is 5 or more points higher, then we remove that round and use 9 of the 10 rounds.

Another issue is this is based on all players. We have a division-based handicap league. The three divisions are Advanced, Intermediate, and Recreational.

I am indeed referring to my DIscBeat Club League. I don’t know why any league director would want to try and establish a handicap based on so few rounds . I guess I’ll have to continue doing it on my own or wait several years like we had to before getting the handicap function.

I have a similar request. It would be nice to increase the minimum number of rounds required to get a handicap.
