League Advice - allowing for "make up" events for people who miss league night

I have a handicap league and am interested in moving my league management from an Excel spreadsheet to UDisc’s tools next year. I like the idea of being able to leverage UDiscs ratings to make the handicaps a bit smarter and customized for each course and layout we play.

The problem is that we allow “make up” games to be played if someone can’t make our weekly event. As long as they get their round in before the week is over and have one other league member there to vouch for them, it still counts towards league standings.

I’m not sure how to handle that in UDisc. Can I re-open an event that is days old to add a new card for the make up time? Can I add a new event for that one person and have it score as if they’d played with everyone else?

Any advice here? I’ve check with my members. They love having the make up option and would rather deal will less accurate handicaps than give it up.

Thanks for reaching out, Tim! Yes, you could un-complete an event to re-open it for a late make-up round, and then the player could add their own score or the league admin could enter the score directly onto the leaderboard. You can also extend the league events so they’re a longer “flex” format with a full week to get your round in, for example. I hope this helps!

I figured out how to reopen the event and add a card. Thanks for the advice, David.

Hey David, We tried the makeup fix in our league, but if it’s raining on league night is a sunny round 2 days before or after really fair?

What were you using in the excel for handicap? Were you applying the HC to the round afterwards?

We use dgscene and while we don’t get the HC loaded into Udisc before the round there is a lot more resolution on the results. The way Udisc does it you get the strokes assigned before the round. It makes it easy to know where you’re at on that night, kinda. There are a lot more ties and it sorts them some unkown way. With dgscene it’s the HC to .01, rarely a tie.

Playing a makeup round a few days later is totally not fair. Weather could be worse, could be better. But we don’t care. My league is only a dozen people who all know each other, and our goal is to get people out to the course having fun and learning how to play. We don’t charge fees and don’t give out prizes. We just have a disc we use as a travelling trophy for the year’s top player.

Our handicap system is just average of last 5 with the worst score thrown out. Our newbies have blowup days that just destroy their handicaps if we don’t give them some grace…

Currently I manually change everyone’s starting score to match their handicap. I’m a +2 so I start at a -2 score. Our newest member is a +20 so he starts at -20 for his round.

@capnhoppy How do you do the rounding?

Our current formula for regular season is drop high and low ever 5 rounds. Average remaining and multiply by 80%.

In the fall we have a bracket and average the best 10 of the year and the matches are heads-up with the HC being the difference of 2 STD DEV, rounded down. This pushes the edge towards the most consistent player over the season.

Our results end up net

1st 54.1
2nd 54.3
3rd 55.2

Handicaps are 2.42, -1.81, 3.93 etc.

So much cleaner.

We round up. Low handicaps need to be earned. If your handicap is 2.2 you get a 3. I don’t mess with STDEV, don’t see a point in doing more than an average.
