Rating courses is a great way to share thoughts and opinions of experiences. Expectations are often very different between players on what a supposed good course is to them. I seek out park style groomed courses which are the most enjoyable for me. Others seek out professional level courses to push themselves to improve. Good for them, not for me.
How hard would it be to create a two option category in Udisc to slot a course into park style manicured or pro level that has more challenging rough, water shots, etc? Similar to the difficulty rating that exists now that would help define what to expect. A course could be park style and long or pro level and short.
I rate it depending on what it is, if its a park course I dont expect stellar lines, is it trying to be a pro course? Is it well maintained for what it is?
I have a course that goes around a school near me, I dont expect it to be an mpo challenge or amazing scenes. It hovers around a 4, I would say 3.5/4 depending on current maintenance, but in no way should we expect a professional level course. If your looking at a dgc that is at a school, manage expectations accordingly. I have also come to find out udisc ratings are a bit nicer then I would be.
I like this idea. Categorizing courses by general style and terrain. Things like woods/park, natural rough/manicured, # of water carries, # of par 3, 4, 5. How shall Udisc gather the information to accurately display how rough/manicured a course is? An expanded opt-in post-round questionnaire?
That doesn’t occur to me in rating courses and, honestly, there’s so much other stuff to rate after a round, I wouldn’t want any more. I give a rating based on whether or not I enjoyed it and that means a) not ridiculously hard gives it higher rating b) scenery or nice flora (and sometimes fauna) gives it a higher rating c) easy to lose a disc decreases ratings d) high rough or places for snakes and ticks to hide drops the rating.
So, given how I rate (and I hope everyone rates based on what they’re looking for, too), a “pro level” course gets low marks from me (didn’t like Lula much at all) and what I think you’re referring to a “park style” might do OK as long as there are enough trees to make the “walk in the woods” interesting (but not so many that every shot is into a tree).
I’d like better / more filter options. For instance, right now I’m specifically looking for disc golf on Golf Courses, and there’s no way for me to filter for that. We check things off like “At a hotel” or “in a park” when adding or updating the course info, but there’s no way to filter for these. These would be the easiest “categories” to start with since the information is already part of the listing. They just need to expand the list to add a few more options like “Golf Course” or “School”, etc.
Hey Kevin, that is good to know that filters of this sort would be useful for you. I’ll pass it along to the team and we can definitely consider it for a future update.
